Loyola Cultural Action Foundation

Jesuit-founded radio network with a small cultural centre

The Acción Cultural Loyola (ACLO) was founded by the Jesuits in 1966 as a network of community radio stations serving Quechua and Aymara-speaking communities across southern Bolivia. From its base in Sucre it broadcasts in indigenous languages and runs adult literacy, agricultural training and human rights programmes. The cultural centre attached to the office on Calle Junín hosts occasional concerts, lectures and small exhibitions on indigenous culture.

It is not a conventional tourist attraction but offers a window onto a still very living strand of liberation theology in the Andes — the kind of grassroots work that Jesuits in Bolivia have been doing for sixty years. Drop in to check the events calendar if you are spending more than a couple of days in the city; sometimes there is a Sucre folklore concert that you would never find advertised in any tourist guide.
