Iglesia San Juan de Dios

Hospital church with a long history of caring for the poor

San Juan de Dios is the church of the Order of the Hospitallers of St John, founded in Sucre in the 17th century to run the original colonial hospital. The hospital itself moved long ago to a modern facility on the city's edge but the church and a small cloister remain, on Calle Hernando Siles south of the centre. The interior is plain compared with Sucre's more lavish churches but has fine carved choir stalls and a serene 18th-century image of San Juan tending the sick.

A small museum in the attached convent rooms displays old surgical instruments, herbals, and apothecary jars from the colonial hospital, a strange little corner of medical history that almost no visitor sees. Hours are erratic; ask at the parish office around the corner.
