The Mercado Campesino is the big working market of Sucre, far less polished than the Mercado Central in town. Spread over several blocks in the northern outskirts of the city, it is where Quechua-speaking farmers from the surrounding valleys come to sell produce, herbs, dried llama meat, baskets, chicha, and coca leaves. Sundays and Wednesdays are the biggest days.
There is little here for tourists in the conventional sense — no handicrafts and no English — but a couple of hours of wandering offers a vivid picture of how non-Sucre rural Chuquisaca actually lives. Bring small notes; watch your bag closely; do not bring a flashy camera. A taxi from the centre costs about 10 bolivianos. Combine with a visit to the nearby cemetery if you like a varied day.
