Convento de San Felipe Neri

Climb to the whitewashed rooftop terrace for the classic Sucre view

San Felipe Neri is an 18th-century Oratorian monastery whose chief attraction for visitors is the climb to its broad whitewashed rooftop. The roof is reached up a narrow staircase from the cloister and opens onto a kind of terrace city: domes, bell towers, and parapets all painted in the same bright lime-white as the rest of Sucre's centre. From up here you can see the cathedral, La Merced, and the green hills behind the town. It is the best near-ground-level view of Sucre and a favourite spot for photographers.

The monastery itself is still partly an active school (Colegio Nacional San Felipe Neri), so visits are arranged through a small office at the entrance during set hours, typically weekday afternoons. Entry is a few bolivianos. The interior cloister is austere and lovely, with a small museum of religious art in one wing and the crypt of the priest Antonio Cárdenas in the church.
