Las Siete Cascadas — the Seven Falls — is a series of small but lovely waterfalls in a canyon about an hour south of Sucre by trufi or taxi. The walk follows a creek up through dry hills, scrambling between pools and over rock ledges, with each waterfall hidden behind the last bend in the canyon. In the dry season the falls are modest; after rain they roar. The walk is short (two to three hours return) but parts require some scrambling and bare feet, so it is best done in good weather.
Local guides hang around the trailhead in the village of Chataquillas; their fee is small and they know the route. Tour agencies in the centre of Sucre also run small-group excursions that combine the falls with a visit to the dinosaur tracks at Niñumayu or the Chataquila Inca trail. Bring water, sun hat, and shoes that can get wet.
