The Obelisco de la Independencia rises at the centre of Plaza Libertad, a small triangular plaza about ten minutes' walk north of Plaza 25 de Mayo. The monument was erected in 1925 for the centenary of Bolivian independence, a tall slim pillar of grey stone with bronze reliefs depicting the heroes of 1825 around its base. A small flame burns at the foot of the column.
The plaza is a busy little intersection of streets but the obelisk itself is treated with reverence by the city. On 6 August each year — Independence Day — a major civic procession winds from here to the Casa de la Libertad. Good for a quick photo on the walk up to Parque Bolívar.
