Cathedral Museum

Religious art and the Virgin of Guadalupe regalia

The Cathedral Museum, entered through a side door on Calle Ortiz around the corner from the main cathedral, holds the religious treasury of Sucre — colonial paintings from the Cuzco and Potosí schools, gold and silver chalices, embroidered vestments, and the gem-encrusted regalia of the Virgin of Guadalupe brought out only for procession. The collection is small but the quality is high; this is some of the best colonial sacred art still in situ in South America.

The visit takes about thirty minutes, longer if you read all the Spanish labels. Highlights include a series of large Last Supper paintings, an exquisitely carved 17th-century pulpit, and the original 1601 portrait of the Virgin that has since been progressively covered with offerings of gold and jewels. Combine with a tour of the cathedral itself.
