Mercado Modelo

Sucre's main shopping market for clothes, household goods, and crafts

Mercado Modelo, a sprawling daily market a few blocks north-east of the central plaza, is the everyday shopping market of Sucre. Stalls cover clothes, shoes, household goods, kitchen pots, fabrics, and stationery, with a small section of handicrafts at the back. Less colourful than the Mercado Central and far less rural than the Mercado Campesino, it is a pragmatic place where city people come for school uniforms and replacement lightbulbs.

For visitors, the most interesting corners are the textiles section (where you can sometimes find traditional aguayos for less than at the tourist shops) and the clothes stalls where Bolivian-made knitwear in alpaca and llama wool is sold at a fraction of the price you would pay in the centre. Bargain politely and pay in cash. Mornings are best for atmosphere.
