Sea World Plaza (Shekou)

Sea World Plaza is the social hub of Shekou, the western part of Nanshan District that was among the earliest areas developed in Shenzhen's Special Economic Zone. The plaza has a long history as an expat gathering point and has evolved into a relaxed outdoor dining and drinking zone with a good mix of international and Chinese restaurants, bars, and cafes arranged around a central square.

The area is significantly more laid-back than the rest of Shenzhen, with a Mediterranean vibe that reflects its history of housing foreign engineers and business travellers. Weekend evenings are busy with families, couples, and groups spread across the outdoor terraces.

Shekou is also the departure point for ferry services to Hong Kong International Airport, Hong Kong's Tsim Sha Tsui, and Guangzhou — making it a practical transit hub as well as an enjoyable area to spend an evening.

A story
The plaza is anchored by the MS Minghua, a retired ocean liner originally built in France in 1962 and purchased by China in 1973. The ship was permanently moored at Shekou in 1983 and converted into a floating hotel and entertainment complex — one of the stranger repurposings of an oceangoing vessel anywhere in the world. It still sits in the centre of the plaza today.
