Shenzhen Stock Exchange

The Shenzhen Stock Exchange building is one of the most architecturally interesting buildings in the city — a dramatic structure in the Futian CBD designed by the Dutch architectural firm OMA. The exchange hall itself is elevated on a huge glass podium, with the building appearing to float above a public plaza at ground level.

The Stock Exchange is the second-largest in China by market capitalisation and the eighth-largest in the world. It was established in 1990, ten years after Shenzhen became a Special Economic Zone, and its existence here rather than in Beijing or Shanghai says something important about the city's economic character.

Visitors can't enter the trading floor, but the building is worth seeing from outside. The plaza beneath is open and offers an unusual perspective on the hovering glass box above. Located in the Futian CBD, close to several metro lines.

A story
The Shenzhen Stock Exchange building, completed in 2013 and designed by OMA (Rem Koolhaas), is raised on a massive podium that creates a public plaza beneath it — a design intended to signal transparency and openness in the institution it houses. The building's form has been compared to a giant red stamp, which is either an irony or an apt metaphor depending on your view of Chinese financial markets.
