Daibutsu Hiking Course

The Daibutsu Hiking Course is a forested trail that runs through the hills northwest of Kamakura, connecting Kita-Kamakura (near Engaku-ji) with the Great Buddha at Kōtoku-in in the western part of the city. The full route is about 6 kilometres and takes 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace, passing through cedar and bamboo forest with occasional views over the valleys below.

The trail passes the Zeniarai Benzaiten shrine roughly halfway — making it possible to combine the coin-washing ritual with a forest walk. The hiking course is well maintained and well marked; no specialist equipment is needed. Wear shoes with grip and bring water.

The Tenen Hiking Course is a separate route that runs north from Kenchō-ji through the mountains and connects with trails toward Zuisen-ji in the east — longer and more strenuous, but giving better views.

Both trails are at their best in autumn (late October–November) when the forest turns, and in spring (March–April) for cherry blossoms along some sections.
