A steep hillside shrine dedicated to Inari, the fox deity, reached by climbing through a series of red torii gates into a mossy forest above the city. Minamoto no Yoritomo is said to have received a divine vision here before establishing his shogunate. The atmosphere is genuinely mysterious — stone fox guardians peer from mossy alcoves, and the forest above absorbs most of the city noise.
The shrine sits at the beginning of the Daibutsu Hiking Trail. Combining a visit here with the walk to Kotoku-in makes for an excellent half-day itinerary. Free admission.
