Gokuraku-ji

A quiet Shingon temple at the western end of the Enoden line, best known as the filming location for several Japanese period dramas. Founded in 1259 by the monk Ninshō, who used the temple grounds as a welfare hospital for the poor and sick — an unusual social role for a medieval Buddhist institution. The grounds are small but beautifully serene, with the main hall backed by forested hills.

The walk from Gokurakuji Station is less than five minutes. Combining it with a walk along the coast from Inamuragasaki makes for a pleasant afternoon on the quieter western side of Kamakura. Admission free.
