Jochi-ji

The fourth-ranked of Kamakura's Five Great Zen Temples, Jochi-ji is the quietest and least visited of the five, which makes it all the more worthwhile. Founded in 1283, its grounds are compact but serene, with a mossy stone garden and a hall housing three Buddha images representing past, present, and future. The approach road from Kita-Kamakura Station passes in front of Tokei-ji; Jochi-ji is a few steps further up the valley.

The Daibutsu Hiking Trail begins (or ends) at the back of Jochi-ji's grounds, making it a natural starting point for the walk over the ridge to Kotoku-in. Admission around 200 yen.
