The main shopping street of Kamakura, running north from the station to the first torii gate of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. On a busy day the narrow pedestrian lane is so packed it barely moves, lined with shops selling ningyo-yaki (Buddha-shaped pancakes filled with red bean paste), rice crackers, ceramics, antiques, local craft beer, and every form of Daibutsu souvenir imaginable.
It is cheerfully commercial, but not entirely devoid of character — a few older specialty shops persist between the tourist tat, and the street is genuinely lively. Worth walking end-to-end at least once. The parallel street to the east, Wakamiya-oji, is wider, quieter, and tree-lined.
