A large Nichiren sect temple hidden in a wooded hollow east of Komachi-dori, rarely crowded despite being just a few minutes' walk from the main tourist circuit. Founded in 1260 on the site of the mansion where the Hojo clan massacred Minamoto no Yoritomo's father in 1203, the temple has the quiet, slightly mournful character of a place built to atone for old violence.
The forested hillside grounds, with stone steps climbing between mossy graves and ancient trees, are among the most atmospheric in Kamakura. Worth 20 minutes of anyone's time. Admission free.
