A small island connected to the mainland by a 600-metre causeway, about 30 minutes from Kamakura on the Enoden line, and one of the most popular day-trip additions to a Kamakura visit. The island is devoted to Benzaiten, goddess of everything that flows — water, music, time, eloquence — and the main path up through the island is lined with souvenir shops and food stalls selling shirasu (whitebait), the local speciality.
At the top are the Enoshima Shrine complex, a lighthouse with Pacific views, sea caves at the southern tip, and on a clear day, the extraordinary sight of Mount Fuji rising directly above the sea to the west. It gets very busy on weekends; the climb up the escar (escalator tunnels) costs a few hundred yen.
