Tomb of Minamoto no Yoritomo

A small, understated monument in a grove of trees a short walk north of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu — the grave of the man who founded Japan's first military government and defined the political structure of the country for nearly 700 years. Yoritomo died in 1199, probably from a fall from a horse, and is buried here behind a simple stone pagoda. The contrast between the modesty of the grave and the scale of his historical impact is striking.

Easy to combine with Tsurugaoka Hachimangu; takes about 15 minutes to walk here and back. Free admission.
