Twin Portuguese forts built in the 1580s on the rocky headlands flanking Muscat's old harbour, now bracketing Al Alam Palace. Al Jalali was a prison until the 1970s and still isn't open to the general public; Al Mirani is usually closed as well. Both are best seen from the plaza in front of the palace, or from the corniche below, where they loom over the bay.
