Mutrah Corniche

Sunset promenade along Muscat's old harbour

A three-kilometre promenade along the Mutrah harbour, lined on one side by white merchants' houses and on the other by turquoise water and moored dhows. Walk it at sunset when the cliffs behind the corniche turn orange and the giant incense-burner monument above the bay catches the last of the light.

At the far end you'll reach the Mutrah Souq, one of the oldest markets in the Arab world, where narrow alleys sell frankincense, silver khanjar daggers, and textiles. The corniche itself has a few juice stands and cafes along the way. Early morning is good too, when local fishermen unload the night's catch near the fish market at the eastern end.
