Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Oman's grand mosque with the world's largest hand-woven carpet

Oman's main mosque and one of the most impressive Islamic buildings of the modern era. Completed in 2001, it holds up to twenty thousand worshippers and features a single hand-woven Persian carpet — 4,343 square metres, woven in Iran over four years — and a chandelier eight metres tall with more than a thousand lights.

Open to non-Muslim visitors in the morning (usually 8am–11am) except Fridays. Modest dress is required: long trousers for men, a head scarf and full covering for women (scarves can be borrowed at the entrance if needed).

A story
The Swarovski-crystal chandelier in the main prayer hall was the second-largest in the world when it was installed — 14 metres wide, 8 metres tall, and weighing approximately 8 tonnes, it was manufactured in Germany and took years to commission. The hand-woven Iranian carpet beneath it covers 4,343 square metres and was woven by 600 workers over four years; both records have since been surpassed elsewhere, but the combination in a single room remains extraordinary.
