Al Mouj — meaning "The Wave" — is a large mixed-use development built on reclaimed land west of Qurum, completed from the 2010s onward. Its marina district has become one of the livelier evening destinations in Muscat: a waterfront promenade lined with restaurants, cafes, and bars (in a city where bars are rare, the options here stand out), overlooking a yacht basin with a golf course behind it. The architecture is contemporary and polished, with none of the historical texture of Muttrah or Old Muscat, but the waterfront setting works well enough to make it worth an evening.
The marina restaurants range from international chains to independent operators serving Gulf and Asian cuisine. Several have outdoor terraces facing the water that are pleasant after dark when the temperature drops. The development also has a small shopping mall and cinema. For visitors staying in this part of the city, Al Mouj functions as the main evening social hub; for visitors based in Old Muscat or Muttrah, it's a 20-minute taxi ride and worth it if you want a waterfront dinner with a breeze rather than an air-conditioned restaurant interior.
