Fortress of Justinian (Kalaja e Tiranës)

The fortress of Tirana, traditionally attributed to the Byzantine emperor Justinian and rebuilt many times in the centuries that followed, has been recently restored as a cluster of restaurants, wine bars, craft shops, and small terraces inside its surviving Ottoman walls. The fortress is not large — what remains is more a fragment of wall than a true castle — but the area within it has become one of the most pleasant evening destinations in the city centre.

Come for an early drink, stay for dinner. The mix of restored stonework, modern lighting, and good food is unusual and well done.
