Tirana Mosaic

Roman and early Christian mosaic remains tucked into modern Tirana.

The Tirana Mosaic is a compact archaeological site preserving parts of a Roman-period villa and later early Christian building. In a capital better known for Ottoman, Italian, communist, and post-communist layers, the mosaics are a useful reminder that Tirana's story did not begin in the twentieth century.

The site is small and easily folded into a walk west of the centre. Go for context rather than spectacle: fragments of patterned floors, low walls, and the strange pleasure of finding antiquity embedded in the ordinary fabric of modern Tirana.
