Postbllok Memorial

A small open-air memorial at the edge of the Blloku district, on the spot where the chain of guards that once kept ordinary Albanians out of the communist nomenklatura quarter used to stand. The installation is deliberately understated: a Berlin Wall fragment, a Hoxha-era bunker, and a beam from a labour camp, with quiet explanations in Albanian and English.

Two minutes at the most. It is on the route between the Pyramid and Blloku and works well as a pause to read the labels and look at the bunker.

A story
The memorial brings together three objects: a piece of the Berlin Wall, given to Albania by Germany in 1995; a concrete bunker, one of the 170,000 built across the country under Hoxha; and a metal beam from the labour camp at Spaç where political prisoners broke rocks. Each object stands for a different layer of the dictatorship.
