The Innere Stadt — Vienna's First District — is the historic core enclosed by the Ringstraße, and it's where imperial Vienna is most concentrated. Stephansdom, the Gothic cathedral with its iconic chevron-patterned tile roof, anchors the center and its south tower offers a breathtaking climb. The Hofburg Palace complex sprawls nearby, housing the Imperial Apartments, the Spanish Riding School, and the Austrian National Library's baroque Prunksaal. Shopping streets Graben and Kohlmarkt are elegant pedestrian boulevards lined with flagship stores and ornate facades. Tucked between the landmarks are Vienna's legendary coffeehouses — Café Central, Hawelka, Demel — each with its own personality and pastry specialty. The district is compact and best explored on foot, ducking through hidden passages called Durchhäuser that connect parallel streets. It's touristy by definition, but the layers of history — Roman ruins beneath Michaelerplatz, medieval lanes off Blutgasse — reward anyone who looks past the obvious.
