Maria am Gestade is one of Vienna's most atmospheric Gothic churches, tucked into the older lanes of the Innere Stadt. Its name, "Mary on the shore," recalls the time when this part of the city stood closer to the Danube's old course and served sailors and river workers.
The church is smaller than Stephansdom, but that is part of its charm. Step inside for the vertical Gothic interior, then use it as a reason to wander the quieter streets north of the main tourist flow.
