Café Sacher

Attached to the Sacher Hotel just behind the Staatsoper, this café is home to the Original Sacher-Torte — the dense chocolate cake with apricot jam and dark chocolate icing that is Vienna's most exported pastry. The dispute over the original recipe ran for years; Sacher won the legal battle, and the cakes shipped in their wooden boxes from here are the licensed version.

The atmosphere is plusher and more touristy than at Hawelka or even Central — but the cake is excellent, the coffee good, and the marble-and-velvet salons are very Viennese. A coffee and a slice will run you around 15 euros.

A story
The Sachertorte was invented in 1832 by 16-year-old apprentice cook Franz Sacher for Prince Metternich. The 'Original' designation was the subject of a seven-year court case in the 1950s — the Sacher Hotel ultimately retained exclusive rights to call its cake 'Original Sacher-Torte', while rival Demel's version is sold as the 'Eduard Sacher Torte' after Franz's son.
