Judenplatz Memorial and Museum

A second branch of the Jewish Museum on the small Judenplatz, set above the excavated foundations of a medieval synagogue burned in the 1421 Wiener Gesera pogrom. The site combines British artist Rachel Whiteread's powerful Holocaust Memorial (an inverted concrete library above ground) with an underground archaeological space and rotating exhibits on Vienna's Jewish history.

The synagogue ruins below are remarkable — much of the original floor and walls survive. The combination of medieval persecution and Holocaust memorial in one site makes this one of the most reflective stops in central Vienna. Closed Saturdays.

A story
Rachel Whiteread's 2000 Holocaust Memorial on Judenplatz takes the form of an upside-down library — a windowless concrete cube with stone books facing outward, their spines turned inwards so the names cannot be read. The memorial sits above the excavated foundations of the medieval synagogue burned during the 1421 pogrom that ended the city's first Jewish community.
