Josephinum

A museum at the heart of the Medical University of Vienna, devoted to the history of medicine and famous internationally for one of the world's best collections of anatomical wax models. The figures — life-sized, displayed in glass cases — were commissioned by Emperor Joseph II in the 18th century from a workshop in Florence and used to teach surgeons without the need for cadavers.

The wax babies, flayed muscle figures, and section anatomies are extraordinary, beautiful, and disturbing in equal measure. The museum also has surgical instruments, manuscripts, and the history of the Vienna Medical School. Open Friday to Sunday only; entry around 12 euros.

A story
Emperor Joseph II commissioned the Josephinum's anatomical wax models in 1780, ordering them from a Florentine workshop because he believed cadaver dissection traumatised his army surgeons. The hundreds of life-size wax figures — flayed, sectioned, dissected — were used to train military doctors for 50 years and are now the most complete collection of their kind anywhere.
