Mozarthaus

The only one of Mozart's many Vienna residences that survives. Mozart lived in this six-room apartment in the Domgasse from 1784 to 1787 — by far the most spacious home he ever had in the city, reflecting the high point of his career. The rooms now form a small museum with original-period furniture and rotating exhibits on his Vienna life.

It is not a vast collection (Mozart did not leave many physical objects), but the atmosphere is genuine. The audio guide is excellent. Open daily; entry around 12 euros. A short walk behind Stephansdom.

A story
Mozart lived in this apartment from 1784 to 1787 — his happiest and most productive years in Vienna. Here he composed 'The Marriage of Figaro' and parts of 'Don Giovanni'. Haydn famously came to dinner and afterwards told Mozart's father: 'Before God and as an honest man, I tell you that your son is the greatest composer known to me.'
