Winter Palace of Prince Eugene

While most visitors flock to Prince Eugene's summer residence at the Belvedere, his winter palace on Himmelpfortgasse is an overlooked baroque masterpiece. Designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and later expanded by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, the palace was built for the brilliant military commander who saved Vienna from the Ottoman siege. The grand staircase, supported by muscular atlantes and dripping with sculptural detail, is one of the finest baroque interiors in the city. The building now houses Austria's Finance Ministry, but the staircase and several state rooms are open to visitors free of charge. It is a five-minute walk from the Graben and almost never crowded.
