The excavations on Michaelerplatz reveal foundations from medieval Vienna and traces of the Roman settlement of Vindobona. The remains sit in an open viewing area designed by Hans Hollein, right beside the grand approach to the Hofburg.
It is a quick stop, but a useful one: few places in the Innere Stadt show Vienna's Roman and medieval layers so plainly in the middle of the modern city.
