The Karlskirche is the crowning achievement of Austria's foremost Baroque architect, Fischer von Erlach. Built by Emperor Karl VI as a vow of thanksgiving after the plague of 1713, it is a confident architectural hybrid: an oval dome perched on a Classical colonnade, flanked by replicas of Trajan's Column. The white facade and green roof make it one of Vienna's most distinctive landmarks, and the interior is lighter and airier than most Baroque churches.
