A 400-year-old institution off the Graben that combines a Jugendstil dining room, a stand-up sandwich counter, and an excellent wine bar. The sandwiches — small open-faced rectangles of bread with herring, beef tartare, ham, or egg, eaten standing at the counter with a glass of Grüner Veltliner — are a Viennese tradition. The full restaurant at the back serves more substantial Austrian dishes.
Beethoven and Mahler both ate here. The atmosphere is genuinely old; the staff are perfectly Viennese. Particularly good at lunchtime and for an early evening drink. U-Bahn: Herrengasse.
