Alphabetic Tower

130-metre tower wrapped in a double-helix carrying the 33 letters of the Georgian alphabet

The Alphabetic Tower is one of the most photographed buildings in Batumi: a 130-metre steel tower with a glass observation sphere on top, wrapped in a double-helix of stainless steel that carries the letters of the Georgian alphabet. It was completed in 2012 as part of Saakashvili's push to give Batumi a contemporary skyline.

A lift runs to the top, where there is a small restaurant and a viewing platform that on a clear day reaches out to the Turkish border in the south and along the Adjaran coast to the north. The tower is also striking after dark, when the helix is lit in changing colours.

A story
Designed by the Spanish firm CMD Ingenieros, the tower's spiralling steel ribbons hold all 33 letters of the Mkhedruli script — Georgia's elegant, curving native alphabet, which has been in continuous use since the medieval period and was added to UNESCO's Intangible Heritage list in 2016.
