The Batumi Archaeological Museum is the smaller and more specialist sibling of the Adjara State Museum, focusing on prehistoric and ancient finds from the Adjara coast and the wider Colchis region. The collection is dense with small things — bronze axes from the Iron Age, terracotta figures, Greco-Roman coins, and a striking case of gold jewellery from Pichvnari.
It is the right complement to a visit to Gonio fortress. The galleries are small enough to cover in under an hour. Labels are mostly in Georgian and Russian with a few in English, but the objects mostly speak for themselves.
