The Batumi Botanical Garden sits 9km north of the city at a place called Mtsvane Kontskhi (Green Cape), overlooking the Black Sea. Founded by the botanist Andrey Krasnov in the early twentieth century, it claims a collection with no analogue in the world: date palms and Japanese sakura growing side by side, more than 1200 kinds of rose, and nine distinct segments representing East Asia, North America, New Zealand, South America, the Himalayas, Mexico, Australia, the Mediterranean, and the Caucasian Humid Subtropics. The view from the upper terraces — the Black Sea below, subtropical forest all around — is genuinely spectacular. Late spring through early autumn is the best time, when the flowering is at its most intense.
