Old Batumi

Compact grid of 19th-century streets with carved balconies and small squares

The old town is the most genuinely characterful part of Batumi: a few square blocks of late nineteenth-century buildings put up during the oil-boom decades, when merchants, engineers, and consuls from across Europe poured in. The houses are typically two or three storeys, in plaster and brick, with deep wooden balconies, decorative iron grilles, and small interior courtyards.

The streets to walk are Memed Abashidze, Parnavaz Mepe, Rustaveli, Chavchavadze, and Kutaisi — radiating out from Europe Square and the cathedral. Most of the buildings hold cafes, small hotels, or wine bars. Take your time; the appeal is the detail.
