Batumi Boulevard Bazaar

Sprawling covered market — Adjaran cheese, churchkhela, spices, and fresh fish

The main Batumi bazaar (Boulevard Market) is a sprawl of covered halls and outdoor stalls inland from the south end of the boulevard. It is the city's working food market: smoked Adjaran cheese in big rounds, churchkhela strings (walnuts dipped in grape must, hanging like candles), fresh herbs, walnuts, dried fruit, honey, spices, and butchered meat.

A separate hall is given over to fish — Black Sea anchovy in winter, mullet, sturgeon, and the freshwater fish trucked in from Turkey. Most stallholders speak some Russian and English, and pre-bagged spice mixes (Svaneti salt, khmeli suneli) make easy souvenirs. Mornings are best.
