The Batumi State Drama Theatre is a colonnaded neoclassical building on Rustaveli Avenue, built in the early 1950s during the high Stalinist period. The facade — a portico of tall columns, a triangular pediment, and a long stone staircase — is a recognisable example of the kind of formal civic architecture the Soviets favoured for provincial centres. It is the city's main theatre, with Georgian-language productions and a regular calendar of touring concerts and ballets.
Even if you do not attend a performance, the square in front (Theatre Square) is one of the more handsome public spaces in the city, with a pair of fountains and the Neptune monument at the centre.
