Naujamiestis — the New Town — developed primarily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when Vilnius was part of the Russian Empire. It has a different character from the old town: broader streets, art nouveau and historicist apartment buildings, and the long pedestrianised Gedimino Avenue which serves as the city's main commercial street. The Lithuanian parliament building and many government ministries are here.
Gedimino Avenue is worth a walk in both directions. The street runs west from Cathedral Square to the Green Bridge over the Neris, passing the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights (the former KGB headquarters), several interesting churches, and a variety of cafes and shops. The neighbourhood is less photogenic than the old town but gives a better sense of everyday Vilnius.
