The Old Jewish Cemetery is a sombre stop that helps explain why Vilnius was once known as a great centre of Jewish learning and culture. Much of that world was destroyed, and the cemetery site carries both memory and absence.
It is not a conventional sightseeing highlight, but it belongs in a serious visit to Vilnius. Pair it with the former Jewish Quarter and Holocaust memorial sites to understand the city's Jewish history beyond a single plaque or museum room.
