Church of SS. Peter and Paul

Baroque church with over 2,000 stucco figures by Italian sculptors

The Church of SS. Peter and Paul in the Antakalnis district, a ten-minute walk east of the old town, contains the most extraordinary interior in Vilnius. Two thousand stucco figures cover almost every surface of the nave, chapels, and vault: angels, apostles, saints, allegorical figures, hunting scenes, and mythological tableaux all rendered in white plaster with a skill that has few equivalents in northern Europe.

The effect on entering is overwhelming — the eye doesn't know where to settle. The figures range from the monumental to the tiny, and the quality of modelling is remarkable throughout. The church took over twenty years to complete and is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque interior decoration in Eastern Europe. Antakalnio St. 1. Open daily; free entry.

A story
The church was built between 1668 and 1676 by Hetman Mykolas Kazimieras Pacas, one of Lithuania's most powerful noblemen. Two Italian sculptors, Giovanni Pietro Perti and Giovanni Maria Galli, spent years creating the stucco interior. Pacas is buried here beneath a black marble slab inscribed "Hic iacet peccator" — Here lies a sinner.
