Užupis is the most characterful district in Vilnius — a small neighbourhood across the Vilnia River from the old town that declared itself an independent republic in 1997. The declaration was partly performance art, partly genuine community-building, and it attracted artists, musicians, and independent spirits who have made the neighbourhood one of the most vivid places in the Baltic capitals.
The constitution of the Republic of Užupis is displayed on a wall in several languages, and the border crossing — a small bridge over the Vilnia — has a guard post that issues stamps on April 1 (Independence Day) and other special occasions. The streets are a mix of restored old buildings, murals, art galleries, and studios. The mermaid sculpture on the riverbank — the unofficial emblem of the republic — is a local pilgrimage site. Come for a wander and a coffee; the neighbourhood has several good cafes.
