Europos Parkas (Europe Park)

Open-air sculpture park at the geographic centre of Europe, 12 km north of Vilnius

Europos Parkas is a 55-hectare open-air sculpture park about 12 km north of Vilnius, set in mixed woodland on the site identified as the geographic centre of Europe. The park was founded by sculptor Gintaras Karosas in 1991 and has grown to include over 100 works by artists from more than 30 countries, including works by Sol LeWitt, Dennis Oppenheim, and Magdalena Abakanowicz.

The sculptures range from monumental to intimate, and the woodland setting means you discover them gradually as you walk the paths. The centrepiece is Karosas's own installation of thousands of Soviet-era television sets arranged in the forest. The park is genuinely impressive — not a typical collection of isolated objects on pedestals, but an integrated landscape of art and nature. You need at least two hours here. A taxi or car is the easiest way; limited bus service also runs from Vilnius.

A story
In 1989, French geographers calculating the centre of Europe determined it fell in Lithuania — 26 km north of Vilnius. The sculptor Gintaras Karosas discovered this and created a sculpture on the site, then gradually expanded the project into a 55-hectare sculpture park. It is now one of the largest open-air sculpture museums in the world.
