Church of the Holy Spirit (Dominican)

Baroque Dominican church with one of the finest interiors in the old town

The Church of the Holy Spirit on Domininkų Street is the most complete Baroque interior in Vilnius. The Dominican church was rebuilt in high Baroque style in the 18th century, and the interior — a single nave dripping with gilded altarpieces, polychrome marble columns, and painted vault — is one of the most lavish religious interiors in the Baltic states.

The church also contains the preserved bodies of SS. Anthony, John, and Eustachius — three Franciscan martyrs from the 14th century, displayed in glass cases beneath the high altar. This is the kind of grim-fascinating detail that Vilnius's churches specialise in. The church is still active and holds masses in Polish, reflecting the historically Polish character of much of Vilnius's Catholic community.
