Vingis Park

The largest park in Vilnius, on a forested bend of the Neris River — site of the 1988 Sąjūdis rallies

Vingis Park occupies a large forested peninsula formed by a bend of the Neris River, a twenty-minute walk from the old town. The park is Vilnius's main green space for outdoor recreation — walking, cycling, running, and in summer swimming in the river. The large amphitheatre in the park hosts the Lithuanian Song Festival every four years, drawing hundreds of thousands of participants and spectators.

The park's trees are largely mature and the forest sections away from the main paths offer genuine woodland walking close to the city centre. The Neris riverbank paths connect Vingis with the city's broader greenway network. In good weather it is one of the most pleasant places to spend an afternoon in Vilnius.

A story
In the summers of 1988 and 1989, Vingis Park hosted the largest public gatherings in Lithuanian history — up to 200,000 people at the Great Lithuanian Evenings of Song, which became rallies for independence. These events were pivotal in the Sąjūdis movement that led to Lithuania's independence declaration in March 1990.
