The Bunkier Sztuki ("Bunker of Art") is Krakow's main contemporary art gallery, a 1960s Modernist building on the edge of the Planty near the Florian Gate that has hosted exhibitions of contemporary Polish and international art since 1965. The name is ironic — the building's clean Modernist lines gave it a bunker-like nickname that stuck. The gallery's exhibitions focus on current art, with particular attention to artists from Central and Eastern Europe.
The gallery has a good program of temporary exhibitions, typically running four to six shows simultaneously across its multiple levels. It also houses one of Krakow's better art bookshops, strong on Polish contemporary art and design, and an outdoor cafe on the Planty side that is pleasant in summer. Unlike the large historical collections at the National Museum or Czartoryski, Bunkier Sztuki provides a window into what is happening in art now. Admission is modest; some exhibitions are free.
