Cathedral of Saint Archangel Michael

The Cathedral Church of Saint Archangel Michael — known simply as the Saborna Crkva — is the most important Orthodox church in Belgrade and the seat of the Serbian Patriarch. The neoclassical building on Knez Mihailova was constructed between 1837 and 1840, designed to serve the newly autonomous Serbian Principality's need for a dignified national church. The interior is richly decorated with frescoes and gilded iconostasis.

The cathedral stands at the heart of the old town, a short walk from Republic Square along the main pedestrian street. Its position near the Residence of Princess Ljubica and the old diplomatic quarter makes it a natural stop on a walk through the historical centre. The attached graveyard, in the adjacent garden, contains additional notable graves and is one of the quieter spots in the otherwise busy Stari Grad district.

A story
The graves of Serbian medieval rulers were transferred here from monasteries across the country during the 19th century — the cathedral served as a kind of national pantheon for the Serbian royal dynasty. Prince Miloš Obrenović and his descendants are buried within, alongside relics of medieval princes and the remains of several Karadjordjevic rulers.
